REIKHET VIKTOR IOSIFOVICH (1922 – 2000)
Viktor Iosifovich Reikhet was a painter and the author of portraits, landscapes, and canvases on military-historical themes. He was born in Ukraine to a German family with noble roots. From childhood, he communicated with his relatives in German, which may have been one of the reasons for a certain duality in his worldview. His passion for painting began in 1938–1940, while he was studying at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Odessa University. When the Great Patriotic War broke out, he went to the front in 1942 as a cadet at an aviation technical school. With the troops of the Central and Ukrainian Fronts, he marched as far as Romania and Hungary, and witnessed the victory in liberated Vienna. After the war, his desire to become an artist finally solidified. In 1946, he entered the Odessa Art School, and later the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (IZhSA), where from 1949 to 1955 he studied under V. V. Sokolov, V. M. Oreshnikov, and A. A. Mylnikov.
Since 1955, he was a member of the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Artists (LOSKh) and a regular participant in exhibitions. He was named an Honored Artist of the RSFSR. In 1975, he was elected to the position of professor at the Repin Institute. He gained wide recognition as an author of thematic paintings, portraits, landscapes, and works of the historical-revolutionary genre. His works are held in the State Russian Museum, as well as in museums and private collections in Russia and abroad. He passed away on February 9, 2000, and was buried at the Volkovskoe Orthodox Cemetery.
The Portrait of Brigadier Tselousov embodies the aesthetics of the "Severe Style" and the monumental Soviet portrait:
Character and Psychologism: At the center of the composition is the figure of an experienced worker, a metal roller. His face, bearing the marks of a factory tan and sharp, strong-willed features, reflects inner strength, composure, and professional dignity. This is not a formal, artificial portrait, but a depiction of a man in a moment of concentrated reflection on heavy physical labor.
Style of Painting: The work is executed in a broad, free manner characteristic of the Leningrad School. The artist paints with large, thick, material brushstrokes, utilizing the texture of the oil paint to convey the harsh atmosphere of the workshop. The portrait combines the immediacy of a quick life sketch with the compositional completeness of a finished painting.
Color Palette: The color scheme is restrained, weightily balanced, and complex. It is dominated by dense industrial shades (brown, dark gray, and graphite tones of the work uniform), which contrast with bursts of warm light—reflections of molten metal on the brigadier's face, hands, and clothing. This technique creates a sense of a living, breathing atmosphere within the metallurgical giant.
The painting moves away from poster-like idealization and focuses on the power of human character, the monumentality of everyday heroism, and the inner beauty of the Soviet worker.
